What Are Common Dental Emergencies?

Increasing Pain

An increasing, persistent toothache can result from deep decay, infection, or trauma. Use over-the-counter pain relief medication and cold compresses to relieve pain and control swelling, and contact us for emergency care.

Signs of Swelling

Facial swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gums may indicate an infection requiring immediate care. If the swelling is severe and worsening, head to your nearest hospital emergency room.

Chipped or Cracked Teeth

A tooth chip or crack can provide harmful bacteria with an entryway, potentially leading to inner pulp inflammation or infection. Place any pieces of the tooth in some milk or saliva, and seek prompt care.

Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

Pick up the affected tooth by the crown, rinse it gently if it's dirty, and return it to its socket. If that's not possible, place it in some milk or saliva and bring it with you to your emergency appointment. The sooner you seek care, the better the outcomes.

Lost Filling or Crown:

Even if not painful, a lost filling or crown exposes the underlying tooth structure, leaving it vulnerable to damage. Use over-the-counter dental cement or dental wax to cover any exposed tooth surfaces, and contact us to schedule an appointment.

Prolonged Bleeding

Injury to the soft tissues, including the lips, gums, or tongue, can lead to significant bleeding. Place gentle pressure with gauze to stop the bleeding. If, however, the bleeding is severe and uncontrollable, head to your neighborhood hospital emergency room for prompt care.
